  • Oversaw two successful virtual AAACN conferences (August 2020 & April 2021).
  • The Telehealth Nursing Practice Education Resources Task Force completed its work reviewing current resources that could be used for the education, orientation, and professional development for nurses engaged in telehealth practice. AAACN released the Telehealth Resource Directory, free to AAACN members.
  • The Certified in Care Coordination and Transition Management (CCCTM®) certification program was transferred to the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Read about the update.
  • Released a new strategic plan with updated goals and strategies in the areas most important to AAACN:
  • the profession we represent and serve; the foundation of our association and the lifeblood that feeds our inspiration; and the experience of our members and key stakeholders. A fourth goal focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion was added in summer 2020.
  • Launched a new Career Center to help members better connect with top employers looking to hire highly qualified registered nurses in all ambulatory care settings.
  • Appointed the Care Coordination and Transition Management (CCTM) Course Evaluation Assessment Task Force to conduct a thematic analysis of CCTM Course evaluations, submit a summary of findings and provide recommendations for revisions to the CCTM Course to include aligning it with the CCTM Core Curriculum, 2nd Edition.
  • Presented a webinar free to members: Coping with the New Reality as an Ambulatory Care Nurse. Access the recording.
  • Presented a webinar free to members, The Current State of Telephone Triage and COVID-19. Access the recording.
  • Appointed the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Task Force to actively redesign our governance infrastructure to ensure the future leadership and membership of AAACN is as diverse as the environments we proudly work and live within.
  • Held a successful inaugural virtual Silent Auction and raised over $4,000 for AAACN’s Scholarship and Research Fund, which provides scholarships, grants, and awards to AAACN members.

2019-2020

  • Released the 4th edition of the Core Curriculum for Ambulatory Care Nursing in January 2019.
  • Announced the development of a new Telephone Triage Online Course, made possible thanks to the generous donation of longtime AAACN member and telephone triage expert Carol Rutenberg. The completed course will provide in-depth and comprehensive education in telephone triage through the AAACN Online Library.
  • Continued collaboration with Nurse.com/Relias to offer the Ambulatory Care Nursing Certification Review Focused CE Series.
  • Continued collaboration with Wolters Kluwer/Lippincott Solutions to develop and review ambulatory care nursing category of Lippincott Procedures.  
  • Collaborated with the Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD) to compile accrediting, onboarding, and regulatory requirements for ambulatory clinical education. The ambulatory care information was added to the ANPD Clinical Education Matrix and is available for free to AAACN members.
  • Connected with many academic organizations and community partners who received HRSA funding for training to enhance RN baccalaureate education for primary care RN roles. Launched a AAACN task force that is developing guidelines to help nursing faculty and practice partners in creating and sustaining educational experiences for undergraduate nursing students in ambulatory care settings.
  • Offered webinars on timely ambulatory care topics. Recordings available in the AAACN Online Library.
  • Appointed AAACN members as volunteers on several additional task forces:

2017-2018

Liz Greenberg, CNE, PhD, RN-BC, C-TNP  Northern Arizona University, Tucson, AZ

  • Published the 6th edition of the Scope and Standards of Practice for Professional Telehealth Nursing, which was unveiled at the 2018 Annual Conference.
  • Published the 3rd edition of the Ambulatory Care Nursing Orientation and Competency Assessment Guide.
  • Held Care Coordination and Transition Management Invitational Summit on May 12, 2018, convening 41 national nurse and health care leaders to create a strategic, collaborative agenda designed to facilitate adoption of the Registered Nurse in Care Coordination and Transition Management (RN-CCTM) role as part of nursing education, as well as the RN role across the care continuum, from acute care hospitals to skilled care, home care, and other ambulatory care settings. The AAACN Board of Directors will compile data gathered at the Summit and develop strategic priorities for this work.
  • Developed CCTM Toolkit designed to assist nurses and leaders working in the ambulatory care setting to develop and/or improve care coordination and transition management for patients.
  • Collaborated with Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) on Care Transition Hand-Off Toolkit, which provides resources to ensure safe patient care transitions.
  • Collaborated with Gannett Health Care Group to offer a Care Coordination and Transition Management Focused CE Series.
  • Continued the collaboration with the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB) on the Certification in Care Coordination and Transition Management (CCCTM) Certification Exam, which launched in Fall 2015.
  • Continued collaboration with the Collaborative Alliance for Nursing Outcomes (CALNOC) to develop, pilot, and implement nurse-sensitive indicators specific to the ambulatory care setting. Appointed new NSI Team to communicate work to members.
  • Appointed task forces to revise the Core Curriculum for Ambulatory Care Nursing and the Care Coordination and Transition Management Core Curriculum.
  • Launched a completely redesigned ViewPoint publication and new enhanced digital edition.
  • Appointed Nurse Executive Group to engage nurse executives in ambulatory care settings to leverage their roles to advance the ambulatory care RN role.
  • Ended 2017 with highest membership to date, 4,297 members, an 11% increase in membership.
  • Celebrated the 43rd Annual Conference in Orlando, FL with over 1,100 attendees.

2016 - 2017

Debra L. Cox, MS, RN, CENP, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN

  • Published the revised Position Paper and Position Statement on the Role of the Registered Nurse in Ambulatory Care Nursing.
  • Developed and released the Ambulatory Care Registered Nurse Residency Program, an electronic, evidence-based resource that ambulatory care facilities can use to help RNs attain the knowledge and skills they need to practice in the ambulatory care specialty.
  • Published the 9th edition of the Scope and Standards of Practice for Ambulatory Care Nursing.
  • Continued the collaboration with the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB) on the Certification in Care Coordination and Transition Management (CCCTM) Certification Exam, which launched in Fall 2015.
  • Appointed task force to revise the Scope and Standards of Practice for Professional Telehealth Nursing.
  • Continued collaboration with the Collaborative Alliance for Nursing Outcomes (CALNOC) to develop, pilot, and implement nurse-sensitive indicators specific to the ambulatory care setting.

2015 - 2016

Nancy May, MSN, RN-BC, NEA-BC, University of Michigan Health System, Ann Arbor, MI

  • In collaboration with the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB) developed a Care Coordination and Transition Management (CCTM) certification exam.
  • Collaborated with the American Association of Nurse Executives (AONE) to release a joint statement on The Role of the Nurse Leader in Care Coordination and Transition Management across the Health Care Continuum. Representatives from both associations will present on this topic at each organization‘s annual conference
  • In partnership with HealthStream and Kaiser Permanente, developed second generation interactive online Care Coordination and Transition Management Course.
  • Released the Ambulatory Care Nurse-Sensitive Indicator Industry Report: Meaningful Measurement of Nursing in the Ambulatory Patient Care Environment in May 2016. The report identifies and defines nurse-sensitive indicators specific to the ambulatory care setting.
  • Collaborating with the Collaborative Alliance for Nursing Outcomes (CALNOC) to develop, pilot, and implement the indicators.
  • Released Care Coordination and Transition Management Review Questions to assist nurses in achieving Certification in Care Coordination and Transition Management (CCCTM).
  • In collaboration with Wolters Kluwer, developed ambulatory nursing procedures for a Lippincott publication.
  • Implemented “Connected Community” online platform to better serve member networking needs.

2014 - 2015

  • Published Care Coordination and Transition Management (CCTM) Core Curriculum and developed complementary online education modules.
  • Appointed task force to develop Care Coordination and Transition Management Scope and Standards of Practice.
  • Collaborating with the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB) to develop a Care Coordination and Transition Management (CCTM) certification exam available fall 2015.
  • Published Ambulatory RN Nurse Residency white paper: The Need for an Ambulatory Nurse Residency Program.
  • Nurse Sensitive Indicator Task Force continues to develop and identify nurse sensitive processes and outcome indicators related to the role of the RN in ambulatory care.

  • Ended 2013 with the most members in AAACN history: 3,031.
  • Developed Care Coordination Competencies. Began the development of a care coordination and transition management core curriculum text and course.
  • Appointed representative to ANA Care Coordination Panel – Steering Committee.
  • Appointed a Nurse Sensitive Indicator Task Force to develop and identify nurse sensitive processes and outcome indicators related to the role of the RN in ambulatory care. 
  • Appointed an RN Residency Task Force to develop a white paper that describes the need and criteria for an Ambulatory RN Residency Program.
  • Collaborating with Gannett Health Care Group to offer an Ambulatory Care Nursing Certification Review Intensive CE Series.
  • Released 4th edition of the Ambulatory Care Nursing Review Questions to assist nurses in achieving certification.

  • Developed a position paper on the Role of the RN in Ambulatory Care.

  • Completed a Telehealth Managers toolkit that is offered free to members to assist them in their Telehealth nursing practice.
  • Held record breaking 37th annual conference in Lake Buena Vista, FL with 756 total attendees. 
  • Published the 3rd edition of the Core Curriculum for Ambulatory Care Nursing (release November 2012).
  • Signed on to the “Joining Forces” initiative.
  • Joined an alliance of nursing groups that support The DAISY Foundation, an organization that gives grants and awards to outstanding nurses.
  • Participated in the VA/DoD Let’s Get Certified Campaign for the 5h year offering discounted study materials to nurses preparing to take the ambulatory certification exam.

  • Offered members the option of receiving ViewPoint via E-mail, instead of by mail.
  • Held successful 35th anniversary conference with 737 attendees. Moved conference to a middle of the week schedule in response to participant requests. Continued with eco-friendly conference by asking participants to print speaker materials from Online Library and offering mini syllabus.
  • Submitted revised Scope and Standards of Practice to ANA for endorsement. Request was declined.
  • Made changes to Ambulatory Care Nursing Conceptual Framework.
  • Completed and released two updated publications at annual conference:
    • Scope and Standards of Practice for Professional Ambulatory Care Nursing, 8th Edition. Scope of Practice added to this resource.

  • Held Telehealth Visioning Meeting to address AAACN's role in the future of telehealth nursing practice.
  • Collaborated with the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to enhance the telehealth content of the ambulatory care nursing certification exam.
  • Held meeting to determine the need to define the clinical roles within ambulatory care: APRN, RN, LPN, Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP).
  • Addressed the mega question "How do we capitalize on the limited human resources (staff & volunteers) to move the organization forward?"

  • Won an APEX award for ViewPoint newsletter, new membership brochure, and poster.
  • Conducted successful 32nd annual conference in Las Vegas, NV with over 700 participants. Offered Ambulatory Care Nursing Certification exam for the first time at the conference. Conference sessions available for the first time in an On-line Library. 2009 conference to be held in Philadelphia.
  • Conducted two meetings to address the mega questions of:
    • How can AAACN increase value to sustain and retain members?
    • What is AAACN's role in the future of telehealth nursing practice?
    • These sessions resulted in strategies to address the issues.

President: Stephen C. Anderson, University Hospital in Salt Lake City

  • Because AAANA was not regarded as a specialty, a significant amount of lobbying by President Stephen was required prior to AAANA joining NFSNO.
  • AAANA membership reaches 1,080.
  • The first meeting between AAANA and MGMA was held. President Stephen Anderson was the guest editor for the MGMA journal.
  • Bylaws were rewritten.
  • Association management contract with Anthony J. Jannetti was re-negotiated.
  • The AAANA newsletter was officially named "ViewPoint."
  • The structure of regions was established and the current state and regional network representative structure was developed.
  • The application process for LNG's was formalized and funds were established for local networking groups.

1988 - 1989

President: Lois Swanston, Loyola University

  • Standards workshops are offered at various locations nationally.
  • 5-year strategic plan developed by the board, bylaw amendments were considered and efforts continued in internalizing Academy operations through formalized policy and procedure.

1987

President: Betty Redwine, Kaiser Permanente

  • AAANA's 12th Annual Conference held in San Francisco.
  • First Edition of AAANA Ambulatory Care Nursing Administration and Practice Standards published.

1986

President: Patricia Miller, Tulane University

  • AAANA's 11th Annual Conference held in Orlando Florida.
  • The elections held this year were the first where the general membership voted on the position of president-elect.
  • Baxter Travenol becomes the first corporate sponsor of AAANA.

1985

President: Elizabeth Murphy, Mt. Sinai Medical Center

  • AAANA's 10th Annual National Conference held April 21-24 at the Knickerbocker Hotel in Chicago.
  • March 1985 the Board of Directors of AAANA sanctioned the establishment of a Task Force for Standards Development with Barbara White appointed as Chair of the Task Force. Task Force members included Elizabeth Murphy, Pam Speich, Lyn Gehring, Pat Miller, and Carol Price.
  • AAANA membership 800.

1984

President: Barbara Ragland White, Medical College of Virginia

  • AAANA 9th Annual conference held in San Diego California.

1983

President: Leslie Robinson, Group Health Association

  • A special by-law was passed to recognize nursing administration as an autonomous group. A decision was made to engage a management firm to handle the operational end of the organization.
  • AAANA Eighth Annual conference in San Antonio Texas.
  • Decision made to retain the services of Anthony J. Jannetti, Inc as the management firm for AAANA. Ron Brady is Executive Director.
  • Subscription to Nursing Economic$ offered to all as a membership benefit.

1982

President: Yvonne B. Songy, Ochsner Clinic

  • 1982 - March 1-4, 7th National Conference on Nursing Administration in Ambulatory Care was held in Williamsburg Virginia.
  • New members joined in growing numbers. Benefits were added, such as the membership directory, and members were encouraged to submit papers for publication in the newsletter.

President: Ellen Marzalek, University of Michigan

  • AAANA 6th Annual conference held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

1980

President: Sandra Reifsteck, Carle Clinic Association

  • November 18-22, 1980 - AAANA members are invited to join with the American Academy of Medical Directors in attending the National Institute on Health Care Leadership and Management in Scottsdale, Arizona.
  • AAANA's 5th Annual conference held in Orlando Florida.

1979

President: Elaine Cutts, Thomas Davis Clinic

  • The first meeting of AAACN as an organization was held March 20-23 Annual in New Orleans. Bylaws were developed and AAACN began discussions with ANA. There were 223 members.

1978

President: Kay McGaw, Kaiser Permanente

  • Annual meeting held in Tucson Arizona sponsored by the University of Arizona.
  • Discussions held about starting an organization.
  • The first board meeting was held at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois, July 8, 1978.
  • The first Board of Directors: President Kay McGaw, Board Members: Elaine Cutts, Ellen Marszalek, Sandra Reifsteck, and Yvonne Songy.
  • Charter members were recruited and a membership directory was published.
  • In September, a special issue of Ambulatory Nursing Administration was published.
