Nurse-Sensitive Indicators

The NSI Team is responsible for the development and dissemination of foundational measures and benchmarks for ambulatory care nursing practice.

Purpose

The NSI Team is responsible for the development and dissemination of foundational measures and benchmarks for ambulatory care nursing practice, which are critical to the mission and vision of the American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing (AAACN) and essential to role acceptance and utilization for leaders, policy makers, and nursing advocates at governmental, organizational, and practice levels.

Colorful puzzle piecesAs patients and families in ambulatory care settings often need care coordination, transition management, health promotion, and access to community resources, the role of the RN as a leader in this setting is increasingly vital.

Nurse-sensitive indicators (NSIs) articulate the value of nursing’s contributions by measuring elements of patient care and patient outcomes that are directly affected by nursing practice. The identification and measurement of NSIs is critical in describing the contributions and value of registered nurses (RNs) in ambulatory care settings.

Created in 2018, the NSI Team serves to:

  • Maintain a connection to ambulatory care NSI measure development.
  • Develop implementation interventions to facilitate adoption of NSIs into the clinical environment.
  • Create a road map with exemplars on best practices for NSI implementation.
  • Communicate pertinent information to AAACN members and support broader dissemination through professional publications and journals.
  • Serve as the expert voice to influence, support, and serve as endorsers to any entity developing NSIs in an ambulatory care setting.

AAACN’s Ambulatory Care Nurse-Sensitive Indicator Industry Report (2016) proposed initial ambulatory care NSIs and additional publications have reported progress.

The AAACN/CALNOC collaboration validated the role of the RN in ambulatory care settings with the development of the nation's first ambulatory care NSI registry database.
