Pitman, NJ - Today's nurse leaders face daunting challenges, including constant shifts in how care is delivered. To help these leaders steer strong and healthy organizations, the 5th Nursing Economic$ Summit, June 6-8, 2012, at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC, will feature sessions that analyze the most urgent issues and offer effective solutions.
"I've never seen health care face so many radical changes," said Donna Nickitas, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, CNE, conference chairperson and Nursing Economic$ editor. "Because the issues — from political to personal — are so important, we designed the Summit to include many question and answer sessions with the top experts in the industry."
The opening general session, "How Can We Afford to Die," has already garnered a huge amount of interest, Nickitas said, due to the astronomic cost of end-of-life care and the struggles families and health care facilities face trying to provide care to dying patients.
Additional topics include staffing based on evidence, policy and politics, and respectful relationships. As in previous years, nurse leaders, executives, educators, deans, administrators and other decision makers from hospitals and schools of nursing are expected to attend. The theme of the conference is "Restructuring and Aligning Health Care Practice to New Systems."
Participants will also view innovative poster presentations, earn up to 14.25 continuing nursing education (CNE) contact hours and meet with vendors, educators and others in the exhibit hall. Continental breakfasts, networking luncheons, and coffee and refreshment breaks are included with registration.

Program
On Wednesday, June 6, Nickitas will join Christine Tassone Kovner, PhD, RN, FAAN, New York University professor, for the opening general session, "How Can We Afford to Die?" The financial barriers and insurance restrictions that arise during the last months of life, and how society addresses these issues, will be discussed. There will also be a question and answer period on how leaders, health care providers, elected officials, and consumers can work together to achieve high-quality end-of-life care with realistic costs.
The following day, Stuart Altman, PhD, national health policy professor at Brandeis University, will present the keynote address, "The Changing Health Care Delivery System: The Impact of Political and Economic Forces." Altman will focus on the growing importance of state and federal reimbursement policies. He will also analyze the new federal bundled and global payment approaches and the impact of health reform legislation.
Sessions on Friday, June 8, will focus on inter-professional education and collaboration. This team-based care is the model for the future of health care, and these sessions will discuss its potential to impact and change health care delivery.
