RWJF Supports Two Studies on Nurses’ Scope of Practice

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation recently announced its support for two new studies on the Nurses’ Scope of Practice from its Future of Nursing National Research Agenda.

The RWJF awarded two grants totaling $500,000 to fund research into barriers to nurses’ ability to practice to full extent of their education and training. The studies will examine the regulations, policies, and practices that affect nurses’ ability to practice to the full extent of their education and training.

One grant was awarded to researchers at the University of Florida and will examine the impact of state regulations and barriers on advanced practice registered nurses’ (APRNs) practice, with a focus in rural and underserved areas.

Another grant was awarded to researchers at the University of California, San Francisco, who will study the structural, practice, and policy opportunities and barriers that affect psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioners’ ability to use their skill set and expertise in public mental health settings.
