OCR Issues Guidance on How Health Care Providers Can Contact Former COVID-19 Patients About Blood and Plasma Donation Opportunities. On June 12, 2020, the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) at the U.S Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued guidance on how the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy Rule permits covered health care providers to contact their patients who have recovered from COVID-19 to inform them about how they can donate their blood and plasma containing antibodies to help other patients with COVID-19. Nurses Continue to Rate Highest in Honesty, Ethics - WASHINGTON, D.C. - For the 18th year in a row, Americans rate the honesty and ethics of nurses highest among a list of professions that Gallup asks U.S. adults to assess annually. Currently, 85% of Americans say nurses' honesty and ethical standards are "very high" or "high," essentially unchanged from the 84% who said the same in 2018. Alternatively, Americans hold car salespeople in the lowest esteem, with 9% saying individuals in this field have high levels of ethics and honesty, similar to the 8% who said the same in 2018. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) has posted three new Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) videos. The videos – “NLC and PSOR Requirements,” “Guide to NLC for Nursing Students,” and “Guide to NLC for Nurse Employers” -- provide important education and updates. The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) allows a nurse to have one multistate license with the ability to practice in the home state and other compact states. AMSN.org Commentary on a Severe Nursing Shortage - The hot-button topic of the nursing shortage took center stage on April 30 when CNN published an article by Parija Kavilanz, “Nursing Schools Are Rejecting Thousands of Applicants – In the Middle of a Nursing Shortage.” Sadly, the CNN article is true: Nursing schools are turning away thousands of qualified applicants (56,000 in 2017), and schools are struggling to hire more qualified teachers. (From AMA Wire) A recent article in The Journal of Clinical Hypertension provides a framework to optimize accurate blood-pressure readings and boost patient adherence to treatment. It should help physicians enhance management of hypertension, which is defined as a consistent blood pressure reading of 140/90 mm Hg or higher... The foundation for the paper is the recognition that primary care physicians cannot do it all. They need to work more effectively with medical assistants, nurses and other members of practice team. The Massachusetts legislation seeking better protections for nurses is named after her. Improving Diagnostic Safety - Diagnostic error is a significant and under-recognized threat to patient safety. AHRQ is funding research to better understand how these errors happen and what can be done to prevent them. According to the AHRQ-sponsored report, Improving Diagnosis in Health Care Link to Exit Disclaimer, published by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 2015, most patients will experience at least one diagnostic error in their lifetime. Retention of older nurses is preservation of human capital, knowledge, and expertise. It is not enough to increase the age at which nurses can retire. Organizational leaders must consider strategies to retain nurses by enhancing job satisfaction and providing physical accommodations. Creating a positive work environment that empowers older nurses to feel a sense of belonging and purpose is vital.
